Product Testing
CERC is the only consumer organization in Asia, other than Japan, with its own in house laboratory, carrying out product testing at various levels. The well-equipped lab uses unbiased, strict, and objective-testing procedures to test products used by common consumers in their day-to-day life.
The laboratory tests products in three categories, viz. food, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, domestic electrical appliances, accessories, lighting products, and fans. It also tests personal care products– hair, skin, and dental care products. We are in process of starting a testing laboratory of submersible pumps. The laboratory tests products following Indian and international standards. They also devise test programmes including safety, quality, performance, and convenience of use, parameters devised in-house and even against advertising claims of manufacturers. Environment criteria like, energy, consumption, sound, disposal/recycling suggestions, material labeling comprising packaging material etc.- for electrical appliances and toxic material- heavy metals (Lead and Copper) in food products. They also rate and rank products on the basis of test results. The final evaluation of products environmental criteria is also given the weightage and highlighted with green colour. Based on these test results, we approach the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for revision of the Standards, when required. Procedures are carried out with due fairness and transparency.
The test reports are published and publicized by the Grahak Sathi magazine. The reports carry the manufacturers’ response to the test findings as well. Consumers are provided with ‘Best Buy’ information for sustainable consumption by way of product comparative test reports.
