Sindoor samples contain unsafe levels of lead
Vermilion or sindoor may contain unsafe levels of lead which is associated with lower IQ and growth delays in children. Researchers from Rutgers University, USA reported that 43% of samples collected from India had more than 20 microgram of lead per gram of cosmetic powder – the limit imposed by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Researchers said the government should look at this as a public health issue and not rely on consumers to make the right choices. The study was published in the American Journal of Public Health.
Drinking coffee may help women diabetics live longer
Diabetics are usually barred from eating and drinking many foods and beverages. However, as per new research, coffee is one drink they should have. An 11-year Portuguese study has found that women with diabetes who have a regular cup of coffee are 51% less likely to die. However, further research is needed to confirm this benefit.
The researchers were not sure why no benefit was seen for male diabetics. The research was presented at a meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD).
