Far-fetched claims

The print advertisement of Gulab Sungold Refined Sunflower Oil claimed that the product was “100% pure” and healthy because it was “the less absorption oil”. It was apparently also healthy due to “its light flavour” and contained “Omega 6 and Vitamin E which act as antioxidants”. The advt went on to claim that the product “is rich in natural vitamins and reduces the level of bad cholesterol”.

These multiple exaggerated claims caught our attention. We did a quick research and found that the benefits mentioned were intrinsic to sunflower oil. Why then shouldn’t consumers use any sunflower oil? Hence, the advt was misleading by omission. CERS complained to Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI). ASCI replied that the claims were misleading by exaggeration as they were not substantiated with technical data or product test reports. The advertiser was advised to withdraw or modify the advt.
