Sale of non-ISI helmets to be banned

Setting a standard

nwsfl

The sale of non-ISI helmets for two-wheelers will be an offence by this year-end. The Government is making it mandatory for all helmet manufacturers to obtain certification from Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in its bid to reduce road fatalities. The BIS has informed a Supreme Court panel on road safety that it can complete the process in six months. Sale of helmets using fake ISI mark will attract high penalty for the violators.

Availability of non-standard helmets at less price is one of the reasons why people prefer to buy them despite knowing that they are unsafe. How many people died because of using s poor quality helmet is not known but the number could be high.

Cigarette packs to carry quitline number from Sep 1

Dealing with addiction

From September 1, packets of cigarettes, beedis and all forms of chewing tobacco in India will have to carry a toll-free helpline (quitline) number along with the 85% pictorial health warnings on both sides. This is as per a gazette notification issued on April 3, 2018.

The Central Government has for the first time introduced a Quit Today number – 1800-11-2356 – to be printed on all tobacco product packets. Counsellors at the helpline will advise callers on how to get rid of the addiction. The packs will also have to carry the warning line: ‘tobacco causes cancer’ and ‘tobacco causes painful death’ in white font on a red background.

Tackling malnutrition

The Food Safety And Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) has introduced +F logo for fortified staple food products such as rice, wheat, oil and milk which will help people identify which food products are rich in nutrients.
