 Say yes to coconut water

Health matters 1

Coconut water is a popular thirst-quencher and packs a nutritional punch as well. It has long been a popular drink in tropical countries where it is available fresh. Recently, it has become immensely popular because of its health benefits.

Coconut water is a mix of the fluid inside the coconut and fresh grated coconut. It should not be confused with coconut milk. Coconut water has similar or fewer carbohydrates and calories than most juices but more potassium, sodium, magnesium and calcium. One cup of coconut water contains 46 calories and 2.6g of fibre. It contains 1.78g of protein and less than 1g of total fat.

Strengthens immunity: Coconut water is rich in nutrients and vitamins and has anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties that can help increase your immunity. It helps you bounce back from an infection. That is why it is highly recommended for convalescents.

Promotes digestion: Drink coconut water for relief, if you encounter digestive problems. Its high concentration of fibre prevents indigestion and reduces the occurrence of acid reflux.

Good for kidneys: If you have urinary tract infections, consume coconut water. Its diuretic properties help increase urine production and flush out microbes from the kidneys and bladder.

Normalises blood pressure: Coconut water helps improve blood circulation, controls blood sugar levels and lowers high blood pressure levels, thereby reducing the risk of cardiovascular issues.

Better than sports drinks: The next time you need hydration after a workout, go for coconut water instead of sports drinks. Sports drinks are loaded with sugar, artificial flavours and colours.

Beautifies skin: It flushes out toxins making you look radiant. It also hydrates your skin reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

Promotes weight loss: If you are on a weight loss spree, coconut water is a must-have as it is low in fat. It also helps one feel full because of high fibre content.

Wards off osteoporosis and depression: Magnesium, a nutrient that keep bones strong and wards off depression, is found in abundance in coconut water.

Slows down ageing: Coconut water is packed with antioxidants that slow down the aging process by neutralising the free radicals in the body.

 Buying tips

While selecting a fresh coconut remember that the hard brown shell indicates that the coconut is mature. Look for those that are young and green on the exterior. They will usually have a large supply of coconut water. Shake the coconut up and down to gauge how much liquid it contains.
