Stroking a baby helps it feel less pain

Power of touch

In a capsule

A study published in Current Biology monitored the brain activity in babies in relation to pain during blood tests. They found that gently stroking a baby with a soft brush reduces activity in their brain associated with painful experiences. The study also found that the optimal pain-reducing stroking speed was about 3cm per second which is the intuitive stroke parents give their babies.

Keep pain at bay
