Post office pays NSS amount to widow
Katie Ginwala’s husband had opened a National Saving Scheme (NSS) Account in 1988 with a post office and invested Rs. 15,000. In 1990, Katie’s name was recorded as nominee which is also registered in the passbook. In 2015, Katie lost her husband. Now 86 years old, she lodged a claim as nominee of the deceased account holder for Rs. 13,12,945. She was shocked when the post office declined the claim. As per the rules, the scheme is offered only in the case of a single name bearing account. In her case, there were two names on the account opening form.
Â
Katie complained to the post office in writing that the couple had not been informed about this while opening the account. Moreover, the passbook clearly showed only her husband’s name as account-holder – she was a nominee. She was told that she would get only Rs. 3.5 lakh at savings bank interest rate. Katie contacted CERS which studied the papers and issued a legal notice to the post office. This made the post office take positive action. It paid the full claim amount.
 Tips
- When opening any account read the application form carefully before signing
- Ask questions related to nominees and procedure at maturity. Ensure that all information is provided in writing
- Keep a copy of the application form and other important documents handy
