CERC observes World Consumer Rights Day with host of activities

Ahmedabad, 14th March, 2014

On the global theme of ‘‘Fix Our Phone Rights’, Consumer Education Research Centre, celebrated World Consumer Rights Day at their campus with a plethora of activities including Open House, Expert Session, Weight and measures demonstration and Poster exhibition.

The theme for this year advocates for fair mobile services. Continuing with the theme CERC has made a representation to the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Government of India and to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs to support CI’s proposed amendments for “Protecting and supporting users/consumers of telecommunication services/information and communication technologies”.

A similar representation has also been made to major telecom service providers, asking them what steps they have taken to address the issues that affect consumers of mobile services.

Speaking on the occasion, Pritee Shah, Chief General Manager, CERC said: “We organised a four day programme to commemorate World Consumer Rights Day, 15 March 2014, on the theme that is apt in the current globalisation scenario. CERC organised sessions on ‘Phone Users Rights and Redressal Mechanism’ where two experts from the sector spoke on ‘Telephone Users Rights and Awareness’ and ‘Consumer Redressal Mechanism’ at CERC premises”. Apart from the expert session, a demonstration by Department of Weights and Measures was held where consumers got tips to avoid getting duped.

CERC had also organised an open house session where students from various colleges were given a guided tour of the centre along with demonstration of tests at the Centre’s comparative product testing laboratory. Students were sensitised towards the issues of consumer protection. Various posters on the 8 consumer rights were also displayed at CERC. Posters giving an insight into consumer products were also exhibited. The posters displayed shocking truths about instant noodles, baby products, antibacterial products, herbal diet pills and some misleading ads.

Focusing on this year’s theme, the mediation department at CERC specially guided consumers who had grievances with telecom service providers between 15 March and 31 March. Consumers who had issues with the telecom sector had been asked to approach the centre with their problems.
