Alarming use of antibiotics in India

A study by health researchers says that India was the leading consumer of antibiotics worldwide in humans between 2000 and 2015. Also, use of last-resort antibiotic cephalosporins and strong antibiotic linezolid has increased dramatically in India.

According to the study, published in PNAS, worldwide use of antibiotics in humans soared 39% between 2000 and 2015. Among the Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs), India, saw the highest increase of 103%, followed by China and Pakistan. The UN General Assembly has warned of the growing global threat of antibiotic resistance.
